To launch the first Lattelecom Riga Marathon season under an IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) Gold Label, legendary athlete and world record marathon holder Paula Radcliffe will visit Latvia. Along with Jeļena Prokopčuka and other leading Latvian athletes, Radcliffe will take part in a forum on February 23rd dedicated to running, discussing the keys of her victories, motivations and background efforts with lovers of running and active lifestyle enthusiasts. Radcliffe’s visit will be a symbolic honour for Riga, having been included among the world’s most prestigious marathons alongside Berlin, Tokyo, London, Boston, New York, Prague and other Gold Label marathons.
As was previously announced, having judged the 2018 Lattelecom Riga Marathon, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) concluded that the event fulfilled the highest level of criteria. This enables the May 19th, 2019 race to take place as a Gold Label Road Race, joining the league of the world’s most prestigious marathons. The IAAF evaluates a race’s compliance with certain quality criteria, awarding the status of Gold, Silver or Bronze level marathon for one year. In 2018 worldwide, 36 marathons (including 11 in Europe) were organised as an IAAF Gold Label race, including notable races in Tokyo, Paris, Prague, New York, London, Boston, Berlin, Amsterdam and other metropolises.
Registration for the Gold season launch forum
As of today, those interested can register for free via our website to participate in the Lattelecom Riga Marathon Gold season launch forum on February 23rd. The organisers invite experienced runners, beginners and those who plan to start running their first steps to register promptly, because interest in listening to and meeting Radcliffe and her old opponent Jeļena Prokopčuka will be high.
The forum is planned for 700 runners, which will be the highest number of runners for a season opening. Athletes are invited to take part in order to gain inspiration, talk about their experiences, as well as meet experienced trainers and nutritionists and look out for running equipment in the Marathon Partner EXPO which will take place at the same time. The Gold season launch forum and EXPO will take place at the Radisson Blu Latvija hotel.
Prokopčuka and leading Latvian sports stars will take part in the forum
Latvia’s most-awarded long-distance runner and two-time winner of the New York marathon, Jeļena Prokopčuka, has had many encounters with Paula Radcliffe in leading marathons. In the forum Jeļena will talk about the behind-the-scenes efforts and formulas for success that led to her big wins, while also revealing her planned goals for the 2019 marathon. Both of the excellent long-distance runners, Radcliffe and Prokopčuka, will be joined in the forum by other Latvian sports stars and record holders including Laura Ikauniece, Valērijs Žolnerovičs, and a host of other top-level Latvians to be announced by organisers nearer the date.
